Microsoft Windows Azure, denver it consulting, managed it services, it consulting“The Cloud” has become so prolific that it is redefining the way that organizations are doing business.

Those not taking advantage of products and services on The Cloud, especially within their IT environment, will lose cost benefits and other competitive advantages including greater accessibility, reliability and scalability.

Along with applications being offered from The Cloud such as Office 365, which is a Software as a Service (SaaS) offering, Microsoft is now providing other products and services to customers from The Cloud including Windows Azure.

What is Windows Azure?:  It is a cloud-computing infrastructure and platform (known as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Services (PaaS)), for building, deploying and managing applications through a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters. It is a service from Microsoft allowing companies to host their applications in The Cloud so they don’t need to purchase or manage their own servers.

The problems with purchasing and managing your own server environment: When companies purchase their own servers and manage them at their location, they are trying to gauge how much computing power and capacity they will need for their organization. They may be purchasing “too much” and not utilizing all the available capacity, or they may need to purchase additional servers to boast their power and storage.

Additionally, companies who run their own servers on premise are responsible for the management and administration of their own servers when they require patches, upgrades and maintenance, and if they fail.

The advantages of Windows Azure:

  • Cost Savings and Quick Scalability – With a model such as Windows Azure, companies only need to pay for the resources that their applications are using. Should a company need to increase its number of users or its data storage, for example, Microsoft can simply adjust their rate, making it extremely convenient and scalable. With this “pay-as-you-go” approach, businesses only pay for the amount of space that they need, instead of having to pay for empty storage at the maximum amount which they may never use.

Additionally, organizations using Windows Azure don’t need to buy, manage, administer, perform maintenance, configure hardware and operating systems, and pay the electricity costs for their own machines, saving a lot of time and money.

  • Reliability – In addition to cost savings and quick scalability, another advantage of Windows Azure and the IaaS/PaaS model is reliability. Windows Azure services are provided from cloud data centers which have multiple built-in redundancies. If one server crashes, a company’s applications will automatically run on another server in the data center.
  • Easy Upgrades – Microsoft Azure supports many different programming languages, tools and frameworks, including both Microsoft-specific and third-party software and systems. New web applications and upgrades can easily be added.
