The long-anticipated day has finally arrived. Dynamics CRM for Phones!

With the release of Dynamics CRM 2013 and Dynamics CRM Online Fall 2013 comes the release of brand new client applications for smartphones. These applications, initially aimed at sales users, open new avenues to work with your Dynamics CRM information from smartphone devices. And best of all, there are no additional license fees to install and use them!

The phone application works with iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone devices. Specific hardware, operating system, and browser versions are required so make sure your devices are up to date. Simply download the app from your devices app store and install like any other app. For users on non-supported smartphones (like Blackberry), a comparable web application is available that provides basically the same functionality and user experience. You can access this web application by navigating to your Dynamics CRM URL from your smartphone device.

The CRM for Phone application provides a new phone optimized interface and includes create, view, modify, and delete access to the primary sales record types including Accounts, Contacts, Leads, Opportunities, and Campaigns as well as Cases while Campaigns can be viewed and edited. Appointment, Phone Call, and Task activities can be created, modified, marked complete, and deleted while Email and Letter activities can be viewed. Records can be searched, related records can be related, images can be attached to records (like photos of contacts or products), lookup fields can be looked up, and notes and attachments can be noted and attached. Also, tapping on an email address or phone number will initiate a call or email from the smartphone. Additionally, activity feeds and imbedded Bing maps can be viewed on Windows Phone devices.

I recently tested the new application and it is a significant improvement from the old Mobile Express. The new interface is engaging, fluid, and simple to navigate. The home screen provides a simple list of available record types which can be accessed in a single tap which takes the user to the default view. All system and personal views are available and display in a simplified format optimized for a smartphone screen. Records can easily be searched by tapping the search button and then opened with a single tap. New records can be created by clicking on the new button, existing records can be edited or deleted by tapping on the edit or delete button. While viewing a record tapping on a phone number field initiates a call, tapping on an email field initiates an email, tapping on a website opens the website, and tapping on a related record opens that record. When adding or editing records, related records can be searched and looked up via a simplified lookup function. All functionality is readily visible and accessed by the user which makes this is an application that I can see Sales users up and running on in no time.
