It’s tournament morning at 7 a.m. Shotgun start is less than an hour away. Players are checking in at the pro shop and picking up some last-minute merch. The restaurant is serving a full breakfast, and sponsors are setting up. Volunteers are arriving and hundreds of guests are connecting their phones to the club’s Wi-Fi.
Then the tee sheet system slows to a crawl.
Tournament days, charity outings, corporate events, and member competitions are some of the biggest revenue days of a golf club’s year. They’re also when the course’s technology infrastructure is pushed to the limits.
The Network Load Problem
Most golf course networks are built for a typical day, not tournament day. As players, guests, sponsors, and volunteers arrive, every one of them brings at least one connected device. While they’re posting to social media, checking email, and streaming video, the pro shop, restaurant, scoring team, GPS-enabled golf carts, and staff are all depending on that same network to keep the event running.1

Entry fees, merchandise sales, raffle tickets, food and beverage all generate payment transactions, and every one of them still has to comply with PCI DSS standards. If network congestion slows payment systems, staff may resort to manual workarounds, creating a whole new set of compliance risks.

When it comes to security, tournament day leaves very little room for error. The same network supporting players, guests, and vendors is also protecting your business from cyber threats.
